I think that it is a huge two way process – I have contributed in my role and I have in turn gained so much.

Ian Jackson

Member, General Teaching Council for Scotland

2005 - Date

Who are you?

I graduated from Edinburgh University with a degree in geography in 1976. I held a number of sales and marketing posts with different firms following graduation and latterly was Partnership Director with BT Scotland. After over twenty seven years with BT, I joined General Dental Council as its first Director for Scotland on 5 January 2009. My role is to manage the GDC’s activities in Scotland, working with the Scottish Parliament, members of the public and the dental profession.

Why did you want to become a board member?

I sought to become a Board member as I was keen to play a part in some aspect of Scotland’s life and given my experience and voluntary activities, I chose to look for a role in the education sector. I also knew that I could fit this work around my then full time role.

What do you bring to the role?

I brought knowledge of the education system, gained as a member of various sub-committees of Perth & Kinross Council (attendance; appeal and review). Added to this, I brought public service experience through serving as a Lay Member of HM Inspectorate of Education; serving as an Auditor with the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and serving on various other educational bodies.

What do you get out of it?

I feel that the GTCS role has developed my skills in areas such as governance and regulation and I find that my work in the various committees has contributed to some very positive developments and also in some individual cases has made a tangible difference to a particular person.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking of applying?

Don’t’ underestimate the skills, experience and perspective that you can bring to a particular role. Find out what is required and show you can match the key requirements and remember to reflect on all that you have done and achieved so far.
