John Mulgrew

Chair, Learning and Teaching Scotland

2003 - 2010

Who am I?  Background is working in Local Government, head teacher and executive Director of Education and Social Services has brought me into regular contact with colleagues, community groups, young people and a wide range of individuals. My commitment has always been to help them fulfil their potential and ambitions by offering advice, guidance and support. I have contributed to a wide range of Boards and communities for many years and wish to share this experience with those who, in turn, wish to be members and/or Chairs of Boards: how to lead, how to influence, how to be a team member, developing confidence. I have lived and worked in West of Scotland and am interested in lifelong learning, music and travel.

Why did I want to become a board member? I wanted to become a Board Member to make a contribution to the work of the Board on which I sit. Having gained a lot through working within the public sector and with various communities, I wished to use and return that experience and expertise to shape the work of the Boards.

What do I bring to the role?   My professional career has been entirely committed to working in the public. The focus of my work has been in the area of lifelong learning. My commitment is to help those in the greatest need. I gained considerable insight and experience in my work. All of this I now bring to my role as a Board member: contributions that can be made on a variety of issues in so many different ways.

What do I get out of it?   The work on Boards brings you into contact with a range of people: other Board members, Scottish Government Colleagues, members of other organisations, the public and those involved in delivering services to the public in Scotland. You will discover that you have a lot to offer in your own way: it is rewarding to assist in shaping the focus of the agenda for action of the Board.

What advice would I give someone who is thinking of applying? Apply: and do get some guidance and advice on what the process entails and how you can best present the skills and abilities that you undoubtedly possess
